The Board of Health consists of three elected members serving three year overlapping terms. The primary responsibility of the Board consists of duties that revolve around the protection and maintenance of public health. Mandated duties include healthcare and disease control, enforcement of housing codes, enforcement of the State Sanitary code involving food service establishments, septic systems and private wells, and enforcement of the State Environmental code regarding the safety and sanitation of pools, beaches, and local camps.
The Board works as a liaison between Leyden residents and the Franklin Regional Council of Government (FRCOG) to which Leyden belongs. Leyden is also a member of the Cooperative Public Health Service (CPHS). The CPHS serves as the Health Department for the towns of Ashfield, Bernardston, Buckland, Charlemont, Colrain, Conway, Gill, Hawley, Heath, Leyden, Monroe, Rowe, and Shelburne. As a member of CPHS, the Health Agents, Public Health Nurses, and Epidemiologist provide code enforcement, environmental health inspections, communicable disease investigation and prevention, education and public health information and training, wellness and special programs.
